As many of you know I am conducting an investigative study on the New York City boutique fitness ecosystem and today I want to talk about cancelation fees. This is top of mind because i was charged a $31 dollar cancellation fee this morning because I overslept and I'm still upset about it. So let’s go through some of the most popular classes and what kind of cancelation fees are being charged.
To begin, Barry's charges a $20 no show fee is you do not cancel within 12 hours of the class, you lose the class credit and you get hit with a fee. For CorePower they have a nicer policy where they do a $15 dollar no show fee and you just have to give a 2 hour notice in order to not be charged that fee.
Soulcycle’s policy is that you must cancel by 5pm the night before or you forfeit the class and get charged $15. Y7 does a 10 dollar fee and gives you a 12 hour window.
With F45, a late cancel (within 2 hours) is a $15 fee and a no show is $20. Modo Yoga does a late cancel (within 2 hours) of $10 and a no show is $20. Cycle Bar late cancel fee of $15 and a no show fee of $20 for membership and class pack holders and they give you a 12 hour window to cancel.
Now with Solidcore the fee they charge, is the price of the class. You have to pay the full class price ($40) and they give you up to 10 hours before the class starts. If you cancel within the 10-hour window, no-show for class, or arrive 5+ minutes late for class, you will lose your class credit. If you are unlimited, you will be charged a late cancellation fee per class. This one is truly the most shocking, but just wait till you hear about NY Pilates.
At Tone House, late cancellations and no shows will result in the forfeiture of your class credit. Recurring monthly membership holders will forfeit their class credit and incur a $40 late cancellation / no show fee as well.
At Rumble the late cancel fee of $15 and a no show fee of $20 for membership and class pack holders, you have 12 hours to cancel the class.
At Bode there is a no-show fee of $20, and a late-cancel fee of $15, you have 12 hours to cancel.
Heatwise says that no-shows without cancellation will be charged a $10 fee and will result in a deduction of the class from your account. They give you up to three hours before the class to cancel. For monthly members and unlimited pass-holders, late cancellation of a class will result in a $10 charge, and a no-show will result in a $30 charge to your account
At NY Pilates (the craziest one) any class cancelation or schedule adjustment made within 12 hours of class start time will result in a reservation adjustment charge of $15. Failure to cancel class will result in a missed reservation fee of $48 at our NYC studios and $50 at their Hamptons studios. Your class credit will go back into your account for rebooking after the proper fee is processed. So hypothetically if you miss the class you spent $48 on, you could spend a total of $96 for a whole lot of nothing.
SLT’s policy is if it is before 12 hours of the class start time, you can switch classes by cancelling the class that you are enrolled in and sign up for another class. If you realize you cannot make it to your class within the 12 hour window, classes cannot be switched. However, they do offer a same day switch option. If you miss a class, you may show up as a walk-in for another class that same day and if a spot is available, it’s yours! If you have an unlimited membership, you will be charged a $30 fee for no showing or late canceling your class. I feel like their policy is relatively reasonable in comparison.
At P.volve, if you are unable to make it to a class, you must cancel at least 8 hours prior to avoid a penalty. If you no-show or cancel less than 8 hours before class starts, you will face the following penalty:
Starter/Flex Membership or Package Holder – loss of a class
Unlimited Membership - $20 charge
Nofar Method has a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you cancel your reservation within 24 hours of class it is considered a “Late Cancel” and you will be charged for the class. If you cancel before that 24-hour period that credit will be returned to your account for future use.
For Tracy Anderson Method I dont see a mention of a cancelation fee on the Tracy Anderson website, but I find it so hard to believe taht she would not have one? So if anyone is a member please let me know!
At Mile High Run Club reservations must be cancelled 6 hours before the scheduled class in order to avoid losing that class or incurring a cancellation fee. The fee they charge is $18.
Orange Theory gives you an 8 hour window and then charges a $20 late cancel fee.
At BodyRok For non members you have 12 hours to cancel or else you lose class credit, for members there is a $15 late cancel fee and a $20 no show fee.
At Bar Method they charge $15 for a late cancellation and $30 for a no-show for unlimited membership holders; for class package users, a late cancel might result in the loss of that class credit instead
Pure Barre has a late-cancel fee of $15 fee for unlimited members who cancel a class less than four hours before the start time. Their no-show fee is $20 for unlimited members who don't show up for a class. Members with class credits will lose a credit for each class they don't show up for or cancel late
At Fuze House classes may be canceled up to 12 hours prior to class start time. If you cancel within 12 hours, do not check in or do not show up for class, your pass will be deducted as if you have attended (for drop ins and class pack holders).
At Soto Method there is a $5 dollar no show fee and you get class credit back if you cancel within 24 hours
And now for the reason I even wanted to look into this, Physique 57. At Physique 57 you must cancel within 12 hours of class and if you don’t you’ll be charged 31 dollars. Such a random amount and low key so expensive!! Me personally, I hate cancelation fees. Number one because life is life and things come up. And number two, the fear of me potentially having to pay 40 dollars amd lose my class credit actually makes me sick to my stomach.
I know that studios are not going to change this any time soon, but I think it is important to be aware of these fees before signing up. I hope this was a helpful read. Thanks so much for tuning in!
XOXO,
CR <3
This is a really interesting summary! I’m honestly surprised by how much some of the cancelation fees are. I assumed there’d be wait lists they could pull from.
wow this is so disappointing but also… validating!
